Play.ht

What it does

Play.ht is a text-to-speech studio: paste text, pick from hundreds of voices, download studio-quality audio. Voice cloning, an API for developers, podcast hosting — the full stack. Nothing exotic about the pitch. The pitch is the price.

Pricing that matters

The free tier is the most generous in the category: 10,000 credits a month, forever, no credit card, and you even get a clone slot. That's a real tool, not a trial. Creator is $9.99 a month ($8.33 annual) for a million credits a month with rollover on paid plans — rollover is rare and genuinely valuable if your usage is spiky. As of Oct 2026.

Best for

Budget-conscious creators who need solid voiceovers without the ElevenLabs price curve. If your usage spikes some months and idles others, the rollover makes this the smart money.

The honest take

The value proposition is unbeatable — free tier you can actually use, cheapest paid door, rollover credits. The trade-off is at the top end: ElevenLabs still wins on raw voice quality and emotional range. Play.ht is "very good" where ElevenLabs is "wait, that's a robot?" For most projects, very good is plenty.

Alternatives

ElevenLabs: pick this instead if maximum human-likeness matters more than price. Speechify: pick this instead if your main use is having documents and articles read back to you.
