ElevenLabs

What it does

ElevenLabs turns text into speech that sounds unsettlingly human — the pauses, the emphasis, the almost-breathing quality. It's the default choice for narration, audiobooks, video voiceovers, podcasts, and AI voice agents. The voice cloning is the headline feature: a short sample of your voice, and it can read anything in it. Thousands of community voices in the library too.

Pricing that matters

Free gives you 10,000 credits a month — roughly 10 minutes of audio — but it's non-commercial and requires attribution, and there's no cloning. Starter is $6 a month for 30,000 credits with commercial rights and Instant Voice Cloning. Creator ($22) and Pro ($99) scale the minutes. First-month promos float around, so check the pricing page. As of Oct 2026.

Best for

Creators who need human-sounding narration: YouTubers, podcasters, course creators, audiobook producers. If the voice has to not sound like a robot, start here.

The honest take

The quality gap is real — nothing else sounds this natural. The catches: the free tier is a taste, not a tool (10 minutes, non-commercial), credits are shared across their whole stack so a music-heavy month eats your voice budget, and the usual AI-voice ethics apply — cloning voices you don't own is a problem, and the platform knows it. Use the power responsibly.

Alternatives

Play.ht: pick this instead if you want a genuinely usable free tier (10k credits monthly, no card) with rollover on paid plans. Murf: pick this instead if you prefer a simpler studio interface and mostly need presentation-style narration.
